1) Journalism 2) Burnham Square 3) Sovereignty

 2025 Kentucky Top 12

Name, sire, dam, damsire, date of birth, Dosage Index, the original purchase price if available, and final splits from previous prep race.

Link in name goes to one of their key races.

1) Journalism | Curlin–Mopotism by Uncle Mo (2/6) (DI 3.57) $825,000 37.4, 12.3 The morning line favorite for this year's Kentucky Derby, and a legitimate one at that. He has looked fabulous in the AM, and has a definite track presence. A total pro. He has the 'it' factor. Three races at two, and cycling to his third start of the year in the Derby. Another move forward off his excellent Santa Derby is expected. He beat smaller fields in California, but he's one the older colts in the race. Breaks from a good post where Rispoli will still have to work out a trip before making his move. One concern could be--being to close to a possible hot pace. The one to beat.

2) Burnham Square | Liam’s Map – Linda by Scat Daddy (4/9) (DI 7.80) Homebred 38.8, 12.9 Entering the Derby off his wide winning trip in the Blue Grass. He had to run down a loose East Avenue--not the easiest thing to do, but his race two back in the Holy Bull was one the more impressive prep wins of the season. Broke last, and was wide rallying from the back to beat the eventual Florida Derby winner Tappan Street. I think he looks good on the track--and wants to do something. He should get a good clip to run at. Has run well at CD.

3) Sovereignty | Into Mischief – Crowned by Bernardini (2/22) (DI 4.33) Homebred 37.1, 12.4 Godolphin has two entered, and I like this one more. He has looked really good--from what I've seen of him on the track. The Sheikh has been trying to win this for awhile--and this looks like his best shot yet. He sports a huge win at Churchill Downs in the Street Sense last year. In style. The extra distance will only help him, and making his third start into his current form cycle. He should get a good pace to run into.

4) Final Gambit | Not This Time–Pachinko by Tapit (2/21) (DI 2.20) Homebred 35.9, 11.9 Final Gambit will make his first career start on dirt in the Kentucky Derby. A Juddmonte homebred coming off an impressive sweeping move to win the Jeff Ruby at Turfway Park. It was a sharp win, and was not life or death to get it done. Breeding suggest dirt should not be an issue. He should be a decent price--and should make his presence known in the final stages of the Kentucky Derby. Animal Kingdom won the Kentucky Derby in his first career try on dirt--after winning the same race.

5) Luxor Café | American Pharoah–Mary’s Follies by More Than Ready (2/26) (DI 5.00) He stormed home to win the Fukuryu last prep race in Japan to win by 5. It was a visually impressive effort. He looked like he could go around again. Distance should not be a concern--and can't disregard that type of an effort. Japan once cold sending horsed have turned quite hot. Sired by a Triple Crown winner, and has been battle-tested multiple times in large fields in Japan. He moves up on an off track. I expect a late run, but also first time state side to race. But race in the other direction.

6) Citizen Bull | Into Mischief–No Joke by Distorted Humor (4/28) (DI 9.00) $675,000 40.1, 14.2 The lone Bob Baffert runner in the Derby after the scratch of Rodriguez. The two-year-old champion seems to be flying under the radar. His last race in the Santa Anita Derby was his 2nd start of the year--and he did not run well. If one is willing to put a line through the race--I did--he looks dangerous on paper. Baffert knows a thing or two about the Derby. The post is not ideal--but if he can get to the lead--he could be out there for a bit. Can't totally dismiss.

7East Avenue | Medaglia d'Oro–Dance Music by Ghostzapper (2/4) (DI 3.08) Homebred 39.4, 13.40 He's actually the oldest horse in the race. There are some things to like with this guy. He will be making his third start into his form cycle and has looked great in the morning. Nice bottom. Has two bad running lines. And back in Kentucky where his run his best races--although at Keeneland--I expect him to move up on a wet track. Sleeper.

8) Baeza | McKinzie–Puca by Big Brown (5/13) (DI 2.00) $1,200,000 38.1, 12.6 Baeza just made into the field--and he's at number 7 based off his game effort against Journalism in the Santa Anita Derby. He will break on the far outside, and will have to work out a trip from way out there. He's been in smaller fields, and I think it will impact him more than Journalism. He likes to be forwardly placed, but Prat will have to work out a trip. He's the youngest horse in the field. Tough call to use--but underneath is a possibility. His dam Puca produced Mage and Dornoch.

9) Admire Daytona (Jpn) Drefong–Ice Pastel by Shackleford (3/17) (DI 1.86) He was game as could be digging in to comeback and win the UAE Derby. he did have the most perfect trip along the inside. He seems to be the type of a horse that liked to run, on, or near the lead--which might not be work to his benefit in a race that looks like a fast pace should develop. Beaten by Luxor Cafe four back by a nose. He's is a wild card. Hard to get a gauge on him, but if one likes Luxor Cafe, this one can be considered. it's possible a time might come turning for home--and he will have the lead. Again--battle-tested against large fields, and offers value underneath.

10) Chunk of Gold | Preservationist–Play for Gold by Cairo Prince (5/11) (DI 3.57) $2,500 38.8, 13.4 Easily the bargain deal of this yea's Kentucky Derby. Maybe ever. He was only $2,500 purchase and has earned north of $340,000. He also a May 11th foal making him the second youngest horse in the field behind Admire Daytona (Jpn) by two days. He would have to make a significant step forward here off his Louisiana Derby.

11) Publisher | American Pharoah–Indian Pride by Proud Citizen (2/6) (DI 4.33) $600,000 38.6, 13.3 The workmate of Tiztastic, and has looked good in the morning. Publisher is a 0/7 maiden with earnings of over $400,000, He has a late kick which should aid his cause with a moderate to fast pace expected. Ran behind Sandman in the Arkansas Derby. He would have to make a significant jump up to be a factor.

12) Tiztastic | Tiz the Law– Keesha by Tapit (4/30) (DI 4.00) $335,000 38.0, 13.2 A striking looking son of Tiz the Law. He won the Louisiana Derby with an off the pace move. Ran a distant second behind Sovereignty in the Street Sense at Churchill Downs at two. He's going to have to improve off that race to get a part of the Derby--but could be one of the price horses moving well late.

Stephen Alicknovic

You know it's been awhile since I've done anything here. So I'm going to start I think. It will probably be some horse racing stuff, but it could be anything. I'll work on that. I think I can do some freestyling here, and just start using it to some extent.

ThoroughbredZone's Kentucky Derby 12

1) Fierceness | City of Light - Nonna Bella by Stay Thirsty (3/28) (Dosage Index 5.00) Homebred 36.91, 12.59 | The morning line favorite drew the far outside post position of 17. All things considered this is not the worst place he could have drawn. He has a quick easy stride, and should get into position easily--that's if breaks well. The times he has not--it did not work out. Speed and more speed. He has looked the part. The horse to beat. Florida Derby Replay

2) Catching Freedom | Constitution - Catch My Drift by Pioneer of the Nile (3/8) (Dosage Index 5.67) $575,000 36.58, 12.05 | The late charging Louisiana Derby Derby winner goes from post 4. He should be able to tuck in and sit a good trip. Already confirmed a mile and three sixteenth has a solid late kick--should be moving well late. One that will benefit from an expected fast pace.  Broke his maiden 1st out at CD. Louisiana Derby Replay

3) Sierra LeoneGun Runner - Heavenly Love by Malibu Moon (3/31) (Dosage Index 2.00) $2,300,000 38.02, 13.02 | The late charging son of Gun Runner will look to do what he does best--close. Not the most ideal spot, and will have to navigate kick back, but has handled in the past, but this is an entirely new level of it. Muscular colt. Horse has shown he likes an off track. Bluegrass Stakes Replay

4) Resilience | Into Mischief - Meadowsweet by Smart Strike (3/24) (Dosage Index 3.50) Homebred 37.81, 12.93 | The Wood Winner will have to make the best of his far outside post. He has tactical speed and should never be too far off the pace. Depending on how fast they go, that could be a bad thing, or a good thing. He looks to be coming into this race fit. Wood Memorial Replay

5) Stronghold Ghostzapper - Spectator by Jimmy Creed (1/24) (Dosage Index 3.00) Homebred 38.69, 13.10 | The Santa Anita Derby did not get the best draw, and it looks like he will have to be used a little just to get position into the clubhouse turn. He's the lone California dirt entry in this year's Derby. There would have been others--but Baffert is not part of this year's field. Stronghold battled with Imagination to win the  Santa Anita Derby Replay

6) Honor Marie | Honor Code - Dame Marie by Smart Strike (5/4) (Dosage Index 3.24) $40,000 37.01, 12.17 | The $40,000 son of Honor Code is one of this year's bargain horses. He's winless in 2024, but cycling up to his 3rd start since November. He likes Churchill Downs, and at a price could fill out tickets. He's also a May foal and little behind others in the progression. In fact Saturday will be his foal date. Offers good value underneath. Louisiana Derby Replay

7) Just a Touch | Justify - Touching by Tapit (5/5) (Dosage Index 3.57) $300,000 39.31, 13.71 | The lightly raced Brad Cox colt has run well in all three of his career starts, including a 2nd place finish to the highly regarded Sierra Leone in the Blue Grass. This horse has tactical speed, and another move forward is possibility. Some horses leading up the Derby have run their best races, while others have not. Just a Touch is one of those who has room for improvement.  Bluegrass Stakes Replay

8) Society Man | Good Magic - You Cheated by Colonel John (4/19) (Dosage Index 3.80) $85,000 38.13, 12.95 | The Wood Memorial runner up will need to carve out a path from post 20, but his running style does not dictate he must get up into the thick of it right away. His stablemate Dornoch will break from post position 1 and the race looks to have a pretty good amount of early zip. If things go well, and he brings his A game--a late kick from him is to be expected. Offers good value underneath. Wood Memorial Replay

9) Forever Young (Jpn) | Real Steel (Jpn) - Forever Darling by Congrats(2/24) (Dosage Index  3.00) ***$686,682 *36.63, *12.70 | The undefeated Japanese horse will try to do something that's never been done before--win the Derby. There are still questions surrounding him, and the lack of success Japan has had trying to win the American Classic. It's hard to ignore his resume, and against large fields. Not using him could be an error. UAE Derby Replay

10) Endlessly | Oscar Performance - Dream Fuhrever by Langfuhr (3/25) (Dosage Index  2.60) Homebred 36.49, 12.22 | He was out, now he's in. Endlessly has done nothing wrong on the turf and poly tracks. He will now try to transfer that form over to Churchill Downs main dirt track. There is not a tremendous amount of dirt breeding, but there is no denying he has a solid late kick, and sometimes good ones can just flat out run on anything. I expect him to take to the dirt and make a late run at a price. Offers good value underneath. Jeff Ruby Steaks Race Replay

11) Domestic Product | Practical Joke - Goods and Services by Paynter (2/22) (Dosage Index 3.00) Homebred 35.01, 11.77 | The Tampa Derby winner had a slow pace to cut into before eventually winning it. The homebred trained by Chad Brown should get plenty more pace this time around, and if he does, he could make his presence known in the late stages of this affair. He will offer value, and a late kick that would help any winning wager. Offers good value underneath. Tampa Bay Derby Replay

12) Track Phantom | Quality Road - Miss Sunset by Into Mischief (2/17) (Dosage Index  2.20) $500,000 37.91, 12.94 | The Asmussen trainee will wear blinkers for the 1st time in the Derby. He has a front running style which will probably be employed again. He's been in against the top colts of his class, and has held his own against them. He's had 7 career starts, which is a lot in today's standard for a Derby contender. Louisiana Derby Replay

Clicking the name of the horse will bring you to the Pedigree Thoroughbred Database--Name of horse, sire, dam, damsire, foal date, dosage index and original purchase price if availableAnd final 3/8ths and 1/8th time.

Key *** Yen converted to American dollars. I could be wrong, but the price looks nice.

Encino was scratched on April 30,2024. The first horse on the Also Eligible list Epic Ride drew in. And the last horse that could get in is Mugatu.

Kentucky Derby 145 Top 12--Post Time 6:50 PM ET On NBC

May 4, 2019

1) Omaha Beach – War Front – Charming by Seeking the Gold (4/24) (DI 2.69) $625,000 | Omaha Beach has improved in every start this year. A trend that's primed to continue. A well seasoned colt who started his career on the turf. Fought off a determined Improbable in a gutsy win in the Arkansas Derby. He has tactical speed and as game as they come. Looking stout as the Kentucky Derby approaches.  Scratched

2) Game Winner – Candy Ride (Arg) – Indyan Giving by A.P. Indy (3/3) (DI 2.33) $110,000 | Game Winner is cycling to a big effort in the Kentucky Derby. He's coming off two game runner up finishes to Omaha Beach in a division of the Rebel Stakes and to stablemate Roadster in the Santa Anita Derby. He won the BC Juvenile over the strip last year. He has versatile running style. Should sit a good trip.

3) Improbable – City Zip – Rare Event by A.P. Indy (2/11) (DI 4.23) $200,000 | A game 2nd to Omaha Beach in the Arkansas Derby. The sharp looking chestnut has more speed then people give him credit for. He could very be involved early and throughout. Same owners/trainer combo won the Kentucky Derby with Justify last year. They will try to do it again.

4) Roadster – Quality Road – Ghost Dancing by Silver Ghost (4/23) (DI 2.60) $525,000 | A sharp looking son of Quality Road was all out to win the Santa Anita Derby with a long, strong rally to beat his stablemate Game Winner. Should run same style in Derby. Fights hard to the wire.

5) Maximum Security – New Year’s Day – Lil Indy by Anasheed (5/14) (DI 3.00)  Homebred | An undefeated speedy son of New Year's Day has done nothing wrong winning his four career races by a combined 39 lengths. Boasts some of the best speed figures of any horse in the race and came home in just under 36 seconds for the final 3 furlongs in the Florida Derby. Debuted in a $16,000 maiden claimer. If left alone on the front, it could be lights out. A very intriguing horse. (Kentucky Derby Winner DQ'd)

6) Code of Honor Noble Mission (GB) – Reunited by Dixie Union (5/23) (DI 0.76) $70,000 | The good looking son of Noble Mission (GB) ran 3rd in the Florida Derby to Maximum Security in his third start of the year. This colt has upside, and a move forward is anticipated. One of the horses in this race that will benefit from a quick pace, as he should be going forward late as others begin to back up. (Travers Stakes Winner 2019)

7) By My Standards – Goldencents – A Jealous Woman by Muqtarib (3/22) (DI 3.00) $150,000 | A Fairground specialist who rallied to beat a game Spinoff in the Louisiana Derby seems to be moving in the right direction. Ran to a 2nd place finish in his first career start at Churchill Downs in a field of 11.

8) Tacitus – Tapit – Close Hatches by First Defence (2/21) (DI 3.31) Homebred | A regal looking son of Tapit and winner of the Wood Memorial--just like his dad. Colt seems to be improving and should sit a trip somewhat off the pace and make a run. I think the Belmont will suit him fine.

9) Cutting Humor First Samurai – Pun by Pulpit (4/7) (DI 2.11) $135,000 | He broke a track record in winning the Sunland Derby and has been flying under the radar of many, and well as his trainer in this year's addition. How good was that race is hard to tell, but the final time was real good.

10) Spinoff Hard Spun – Zafftig by Gone West (2/18) (DI 2.78) Homebred | This lightly raced colt broke from the ten hole in the Louisiana Derby and ran an admirable race. He got out gamed by, By My Standards. Sneaky tactical speed that should have him in a good spot early. A tall assignment, but this horse has upside.

11) War of Will War Front – Visions of Clarity (Ire) by Sadler’s Well (4/17) (DI 1.72) $298,550 | Put a line through his Louisiana Derby. He never got involved early in that race and that was the end. A well-seasoned colt with 8 lifetime starts, and all were good except for his last one. Colt has a solid bottom and a return to form is a strong possibility, but will it be good enough? A winner at CD. A well put together colt. He will offer big value to any ticket.

12) Win Win Win – Hat Trick – Miss Smarty by Smarty Jones (3/20) (DI 4.50) Homebred | The sharp looking dark bay Hat Trick (Jpn) colt will round out the top 12. Horse gets over the CD strip nicely and likes to get it going. He will sit back and make a run late, but a win could be asking a lot, but a strong effort and the right scenario, another horse who will add value to exotics.

Other Kentucky Derby Horses
